Built in Baroda, Michigan in 1961, this 21' Avalair is a rare find.  Not too
many of these out there.  I have had limited success in getting the history of
these trailers.  Seems to be part Avion and part Airstream - The name is
likely a contraction of the two.  Looks a bit more Avion(ish).  Reminds me of
a covered wagon with the raked front and plumb stern.  Very solidly built - the
frame even has a center rail, instead of the usual two.  13-panel front, with a
beaded panel edge gives it a real machine-age look.  Real Flash Gordon
looking stuff!

It is in our shop now for a complete makeover.  The exterior will be polished
to a brilliant shine, and the interior will get a thorough going-over.  New floors,
upholstery, mechanical systems, etc.  It does have some very cool
50's-looking white formica with little gold starburst patterns that we are going
to try hard to save - too cool to tear out!

Arrived alive!  It towed well from
central Florida to our shop in coastal
SC.  Always the first test.  So far, so
good.

See what I mean about the covered
wagon shape?  Kind of grows on ya.
The Galley.  Check out the cool retro
Formica.  Gold stars.  The copper
colored stove and cooktop are also in
great shape.  The oven looks like it
was never used.  The wall ventilator
surprised me and actually worked.

Under those sink cutouts is a double
bowl enamel sink with hardly a
scratch - another miracle.

The refrigerator is not original and is
too big.  The wood panel at the end
of the counter isn't badly built, but is
not part of the original plan, so it is
coming out.
Wouldn't you love to meet the
person who thought brown
sculptured shag carpet was a
good idea.  Even in the bath?
What are you thinking?

It came out easily, thank
goodness.  The bath sink is
also in great condition.  Almost
makes up for the carpet.

Almost.
The woodwork is in great
shape - sort of a blonde stain
on birch or maybe maple.  The
hardware is kind of retro and
will stay.

Not sure about the light. It
works, but man is it ugly.  I
know it's kind of retro, but
really.  We can do better.
A little exterior work in progress...
We could hardly wait to give these
panels a quick polish to see just
how cool they'd be.

Pretty neat, huh?  The beaded
edges give it great definition.  The
skin is in average shape for its
age.  A ding here and there, but
overall, not too bad.

Can't wait to bring up the shine...
