This picture of this 1958 Flying Cloud
was taken in Florida, and shows this
trailer sitting where it has been for the
last couple of decades.  At first I
thought the tires were flat, but upon
closer inspection I realized they were
inflated, but had sunk 6" into the
ground.  It was almost resting on the
axle.  It took a bit of digging to pull it
out.
The skin of the trailer is in decent shape.
Mostly dent and ding free, but as usual
with trailers that spent many years in
Florida, the oxidation and pitting is fairly
extensive.  Lots of polishing on this one.

But it is worth it!  Check out the
"Panoram" windows.  Wally Byam would
be proud to see this one has survived.
Home at last.

Here it is in our storage field.  Gutted,
cleaned up, new tires, and a partial
polish.  Standard procedure for a
South Carolina summer is INSTALL
THE NEW AIR CONDITIONER FIRST!
Don't let the photos fool you.  Too
many of our clients buy trailers based
on a few snapshots like these, that
make the interior look like it is in great
shape and only needs a bit of updating.

It took only a few steps inside this
trailer to know that we had a major
project on our hands.  The soft floor
was due to a major carpenter ant
infestation - the entire belly pan was
full of the little critters.  Not a pretty
sight.  All of the interior components
had to be removed, right to the walls,
and an entire new floor system
constructed.  Much of the interior
cabinetry had been "remodeled" by a
previous owner, which accounted for
the unusual floorplan.  Aside from the
great vintage appliances, there really
was not much worth keeping.

Fortunately, this trailer is going to a
client with a more contemporary
interior in mind, so the blank slate fit
our plans perfectly.  Follow our
progress as we build a real
eye-popping interior that looks nothing
(thankfully) like what we started with!
The Adventure Begins!

I knew I was going to enjoy working with this client when we went shopping for
wall colors.  You need to be brave to make a bold statement like this, but I think
you'll agree it is already starting to work.
Pretty wild, huh?  We have some very exciting plans for this '58 Flying Cloud.
The exterior will still be pure 1950's Airstream, but inside, we're thinking more
Manhattan loft on wheels.  Stay tuned...
